Asiae Nova Descriptio is an elegant seventeenth-century map of Asia created by the Dutch cartographer Frederick de Wit. Produced during the height of the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, the map depicts the continent from the Middle East to East Asia with detailed coastlines, regional boundaries, and major trading centers. Richly engraved and adorned with decorative cartouches, it reflects both contemporary geographic knowledge and European fascination with Asian commerce, exploration, and empire.
Frederick de Wit (c. 1630–1706) was one of Amsterdam’s most respected mapmakers and publishers. Known for his finely crafted atlases, sea charts, and wall maps, de Wit combined scientific accuracy with outstanding artistic design. His works are highly valued today for their precision, decorative beauty, and contribution to the flourishing cartographic tradition of the Dutch Golden Age.
