Asiae Nova Descriptio is Abraham Ortelius’s 1570 map of Asia from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, widely considered the first modern world atlas. Created as a copper engraving and often issued with hand color, it presents Renaissance Europe’s expanding but still imperfect knowledge of Asia, with decorative cartouches, ships, Japan, Southeast Asia, and a strongly marked Northeast Passage.
Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) was an Antwerp cartographer and one of the most important geographers of the sixteenth century. His Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in 1570, standardized maps into a bound, uniform atlas format and became a prototype for later atlases, making Ortelius a central figure in the history of printed cartography.
