"Asuka Hill in the Eastern Capital" (Tōto Asukayama) by Utagawa Hiroshige is a bright, expansive, and spring-infused print from his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo (1856–1858), capturing one of Edo's most cherished seasonal destinations: Asukayama, or Asuka Hill.
Located in the northern part of the city (in modern-day Kita Ward, Tokyo), Asukayama was famous for its cherry blossoms, and had been planted with hundreds of cherry trees by Tokugawa Yoshimune, the eighth shogun, in the early 18th century. He opened the hill to the public—a rare gesture in a stratified society—making it one of the earliest examples of a public park in Japan. By Hiroshige's time, it was a beloved hanami (flower-viewing) spot for ordinary Edoites.
