Hendrick Goltzius was a leading Dutch Mannerist artist and printmaker known for his dynamic compositions, muscular figures, and virtuoso technique in engraving. Born in 1558 in Germany and active primarily in the Netherlands, Goltzius was admired for his ability to emulate and reinterpret the styles of Italian masters, particularly Michelangelo. His prints and later paintings contributed significantly to the spread of Mannerist aesthetics in Northern Europe.
Bacchus in Half-Length, created around 1596, exemplifies Goltzius’s shift from printmaking to painting later in his career. Depicting the Roman god of wine, the work combines sensuality with classical grandeur, presenting Bacchus with flushed cheeks, flowing curls, and a raised glass in a moment of celebratory indulgence. The rich textures and theatrical pose reflect Goltzius’s command of Mannerist drama and his ongoing fascination with mythological themes and the expressive possibilities of the human form.
