The Carrion Crow (Corvus corone) is an all-black bird with a robust build and a thick, slightly curved bill. It's a common sight across much of Europe and parts of Asia, where it thrives in a variety of habitats, including woodlands, farmland, and urban areas. Carrion Crows are highly adaptable and opportunistic feeders, their diet ranging from carrion and insects to seeds, fruits, and even small animals. They are known for their intelligence and problem-solving skills, often observed using tools to obtain food.
The Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) is closely related to the Carrion Crow but has a distinctive two-tone appearance. Its head, throat, wings, and tail are black, while its body and shoulders are a pale grey. This striking plumage helps it blend into its surroundings, particularly in areas with a mix of dark trees and lighter fields. Hooded Crows are found in northern and eastern Europe, as well as parts of the Middle East. Like Carrion Crows, they are omnivorous and highly adaptable, thriving in a variety of habitats. Interestingly, where the ranges of these two species overlap, they sometimes interbreed, producing offspring with a mix of black and grey plumage.
