The Caucasian Rosefinch (Carpodacus rubicilla) is a large and robust finch with a striking appearance. Males are a deep crimson red with a silvery-white head and a dark brown wing and tail. Females are less vibrant, with a streaky brown plumage and a hint of red on the rump and wings. They are found in the Caucasus Mountains, as well as parts of Central Asia, where they inhabit high-altitude rocky slopes, alpine meadows, and scrublands.
These hardy birds are well adapted to cold climates and often remain at high elevations even during the winter. They feed primarily on seeds, buds, and berries, foraging on the ground and in low vegetation. Caucasian Rosefinches are not particularly social birds, often seen singly or in pairs. Their breeding season begins in late spring, with nests typically built in rock crevices or amongst dense vegetation. While their global conservation status is considered "Least Concern," their populations can be locally threatened by habitat loss and degradation.
