"Drum Bridge and Yuhi Hill at Meguro" (Meguro Taikobashi Yuhi no oka) by Utagawa Hiroshige is one of the most quietly poetic prints in his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series (1856–1858). This composition, suffused with light, distance, and emotion, captures a tranquil moment in the Meguro area, which was known for its temples, lush scenery, and rustic charm—a place where Edoites would go to walk, reflect, and enjoy the changing seasons.
At the heart of the composition is the Taikobashi, or Drum Bridge, so called because of its elegant semi-circular shape, resembling the curve of a traditional taiko drum. Its reflection in the calm water beneath it forms a near-perfect circle, a shape often imbued with spiritual and visual harmony in Japanese art.
