Ejiri (No. 19) from The Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō by Utagawa Hiroshige is one of the most poetic and visually clever prints in the entire series. Completed in the early 1830s (likely around 1833–1834), this series—formally titled Tōkaidō Gojūsan-tsugi no uchi—depicts each of the post stations along the Tōkaidō road, the major travel route connecting Edo (modern-day Tokyo) with Kyoto. Ejiri-juku, the 19th station, was located in present-day Shizuoka Prefecture, near the estuary where the Okitsu River meets Suruga Bay. It offered views of Mt. Fuji and was a place where travelers often paused to enjoy the natural scenery.
