Frankenstein is a 1931 American pre-Code horror film directed by James Whale and adapted from the 1927 play by Peggy Webling, which in turn was based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The film stars Colin Clive as Henry Frankenstein, a scientist obsessed with creating life, and Boris Karloff as the Monster.
Frankenstein was released in the United States on November 21, 1931. It was a critical and commercial success, and is considered one of the greatest horror films ever made. The film was groundbreaking for its special effects and makeup, and Karloff's performance as the Monster is iconic. Although it wasn't nominated for any Academy Awards (the categories recognizing horror films were limited at the time), Frankenstein has had a lasting impact on popular culture and is preserved in the U.S. National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
