The Asphalt Jungle is a 1950 film noir heist film directed by John Huston. It was based on the 1949 novel by W.R. Burnett. The film stars Sterling Hayden as a hardened criminal who plans a jewel robbery, Louis Calhern as a crooked lawyer, and features Marilyn Monroe in one of her early roles as the lawyer's young mistress. It also stars Jean Hagen, James Whitmore, Sam Jaffe, and John McIntire. The Asphalt Jungle premiered in New York City on June 8, 1950.
The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director for John Huston, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Film Editing. Although it didn't win any Oscars, The Asphalt Jungle is considered a classic film noir, praised for its gritty realism, cynical tone, and excellent performances. It was highly influential on the heist genre, and is still admired today for its sharp dialogue and memorable characters.
