Gustave Doré – Iconic Biblical Illustrator of the 19th Century
Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was a legendary French artist, illustrator, and engraver known for his powerful and intricate black-and-white illustrations. Fusing Romantic emotion with exceptional technical skill, Doré became one of the most influential illustrators of the 19th century. His most famous religious works were published in 1866 in La Sainte Bible, a monumental edition featuring over 200 Bible engravings.
These illustrations brought the stories of the Old and New Testaments vividly to life, making sacred texts accessible and emotionally resonant for readers around the world. Translated into many languages and widely reprinted, Doré’s Bible engravings cemented his reputation as a master of sacred and literary art. In The Nativity, Doré beautifully depicts the birth of Jesus from Luke 2:1–7.
The scene often shows the infant Christ resting in a manger, surrounded by soft divine light, while Mary and Joseph look on in awe. The peaceful setting of the Bethlehem stable is sometimes enhanced with the presence of angels or shepherds, drawn to witness the miracle of the Savior’s birth.
