John Gould was a 19th-century English ornithologist and bird artist, best known for his elaborate and vividly colored illustrations of birds from around the world. One of his most celebrated works is A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-Birds, which he published between 1849 and 1861. This monumental work spans five volumes and includes over 400 hand-colored lithographic plates. Although Gould conceptualized and directed the project, many of the plates were brought to life through the delicate artistry of his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and later by Henry Constantine Richter after her passing in 1841.
The hummingbird monograph is renowned for its meticulous attention to detail and its ability to capture the shimmering iridescence and dynamic forms of these tiny birds. It remains one of the most visually stunning ornithological publications in history. Gould’s fascination with hummingbirds led him to amass one of the largest collections of specimens at the time, which he used as references for his work.
