"Night View of Saruwaka-machi" (Saruwaka-machi yoru no kei) by Utagawa Hiroshige is one of the rare nocturnal scenes in his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series (1856–1858), and it stands out for its lively, theatrical energy and its focus on Edo’s vibrant popular culture.
Saruwaka-machi was the heart of Edo’s kabuki theater district, located in the Asakusa area. In 1841, the Tokugawa shogunate had restricted kabuki theaters to this single designated zone, concentrating Edo’s theatrical life into one colorful, bustling quarter. By the time Hiroshige created this print, Saruwaka-machi had become a legendary street of spectacle, filled not just with theaters, but with tea houses, vendors, lanterns, musicians, and the stylish, fashion-forward crowds who came to see and be seen.
