Nova Totius Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula is a 17th-century double-hemisphere world map by Henricus Hondius after the Mercator tradition. The hand-colored engraving includes ships, cartouches, portraits, allegories of the elements, and early outlines of unknown southern lands. It presents geography as both scientific knowledge and Baroque spectacle.
Gerhard Mercator pioneered influential mapmaking methods, while Henricus Hondius helped preserve and expand the Mercator-Hondius atlas legacy in Amsterdam. Hondius’s editions blended inherited geographic authority with rich Dutch Golden Age ornament. Together, their names represent one of Europe’s most important cartographic traditions.
