Flamingos are instantly recognizable wading birds, famous for their vibrant pink plumage, long legs, and unique downward-curving bills. There are six different species of flamingos found across the world, inhabiting tropical and subtropical regions in South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. They are highly social birds, often congregating in massive flocks that can number in the thousands, creating a spectacular sight against the backdrop of their shallow water habitats.
Flamingos get their pink coloration from their diet, which consists mainly of algae and small crustaceans that contain pigments called carotenoids. These pigments are also found in some of the foods we eat, like carrots and tomatoes. Their specialized bills are adapted for filtering food from the water. They use their long legs to wade through shallow lakes, lagoons, and mudflats, often stirring up the mud with their feet to uncover food. Flamingos are strong fliers, and some populations undertake long migrations between breeding and feeding grounds.
