The Red-legged Partridge (Alectoris rufa) is a game bird native to southwestern Europe, but has been introduced to many other parts of the world, including the UK and the US. It's known for its striking appearance, with a grey-brown back, blue-grey breast, buff belly, and bold black and white facial markings. A distinctive red ring around the eye and bright red legs complete its colorful look. These partridges favor dry, open habitats like grasslands, scrublands, and farmland. They are primarily ground-dwelling birds that feed on seeds, leaves, and insects.
The Barbary Partridge (Alectoris barbara) is closely related to the Red-legged Partridge, but has a slightly different distribution, being native to North Africa. It shares the red legs and eye rings, but has a plainer face with a reddish-brown throat patch. Like its European cousin, the Barbary Partridge prefers arid, open environments and has a similar diet. Both species are popular game birds and are known for their explosive flight when flushed from cover. They are social birds, often found in coveys (small groups) throughout the year.
