The Red-breasted Snipe (now commonly referred to as the Asian Dowitcher) is a medium-sized shorebird with striking reddish-brown breeding plumage. During breeding season, their underparts are a rich chestnut red, contrasting with their dark back and white rump. In winter, their plumage changes to a more muted gray and white. They breed in the northernmost reaches of Siberia, in wet meadows and bogs with low vegetation.
These birds migrate long distances, wintering in southern Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. They primarily feed on invertebrates, probing for insects, crustaceans, and worms in mudflats, marshes, and along shorelines. Red-breasted Snipes use their long bills to probe deep into the mud, and their legs are positioned slightly further back on their body than other similar birds, allowing for better stability while wading. They are typically solitary birds but may gather in small flocks during migration. The conservation status of the Red-breasted Snipe is currently "Least Concern," but their populations are susceptible to habitat loss and degradation.
