Leonetto Cappiello, the Italian-born poster artist who built his career in Paris, is widely regarded as the father of modern advertising. Active from the early 1900s through the mid-20th century, he transformed poster design with his bold colors, simplified forms, and instantly recognizable imagery. Unlike the flowing elegance of Art Nouveau, Cappiello’s work favored sharp contrasts and playful exaggeration, making brands unforgettable. His long career included iconic posters for beverages, perfumes, and luxury goods, solidifying his reputation as a master of commercial art.
The San Bernardo Water poster from 1953 is a late but characteristic example of Cappiello’s visual wit and vibrancy.
