Gustave Doré’s Biblical Illustrations – Elijah Nourished by an Angel
Gustave Doré (1832–1883) was a famous French illustrator, engraver, and artist best known for his dramatic black-and-white illustrations that defined 19th-century religious and literary art. His Bible illustrations, first published in 1866 in La Sainte Bible, include over 200 engravings that visually interpret sacred stories with powerful emotional detail and technical precision. These biblical artworks were widely distributed, translated into many languages, and remain some of the most recognized religious illustrations in history.
One of Doré’s most moving pieces, Elijah Nourished by an Angel, illustrates the scene from 1 Kings 19:4–8, where the prophet Elijah, overwhelmed and alone in the wilderness, is comforted by an angel who brings him food and water. The engraving shows Elijah resting beneath a tree as the angel gently touches him, symbolizing divine care and renewal. Doré’s masterful use of light and shadow highlights themes of hope, faith, and spiritual strength, making this illustration a timeless depiction of divine intervention and human vulnerability.
