L'Hiver (Winter) (c. 1880) by Henri Rousseau is an early oil on canvas that presents a quiet, snow-covered landscape. Small figures move across the frozen water. Henri Rousseau (1844–1910), often called “Le Douanier,” was a self-taught French painter linked to Post-Impressionism and Primitivism.
