The Campo Santo, Venice is a Venetian scene by Joseph Mallord William Turner, depicting the Campo Santo (cemetery) area of Venice with the luminous atmosphere and expressive handling of light for which the artist is renowned. Created in Turner's mature Romantic style, the work combines architectural detail with shimmering reflections and atmospheric effects, transforming the city into a vision of color, water, and light. Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851) was one of Britain's greatest landscape painters and a pioneer of modern artistic expression. Known for his dramatic seascapes, historical subjects, and studies of light, he pushed watercolor and oil painting toward increasing abstraction. His innovative treatment of atmosphere and color profoundly influenced later movements, including Impressionism, and secured his place as one of the most important artists of the nineteenth century.
