America by Hendrik Hondius, produced around 1630, is a richly decorated Dutch map of the American continent showing North America, South America, the surrounding oceans, ships, sea creatures, birds, and elaborate cartouches. The engraved, hand-colored design includes geographic detail alongside colonial-era imagery, including figures and scenes meant to represent Indigenous peoples and New World abundance. Its ornamental style reflects the Dutch Golden Age of cartography, when maps were both navigational references and prestigious decorative objects.

Hendrik Hondius was a Dutch engraver, cartographer, and publisher from a major mapmaking family active in The Hague and Amsterdam. He helped continue and expand the Hondius-Janssonius cartographic tradition, producing maps and atlases known for detailed engraving and elaborate visual presentation.
