Ancient map of Europe and the Celts. Europam sive Celticam veterem by Abraham Ortelius. Fine art print and canvas wallart
This map, titled Europam sive Celticam veterem, was created by Abraham Ortelius and first published in 1570 as part of his atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum 1. The map depicts the Celtic Empire and is believed to be derived from Ortelius two-sheet map of the Roman Empire issued in 1571, and classical sources, including Salustius, Plinius, Herodotus, Strabo, and Dionysius. The map was later copied by Janssonius, with different cartouches, in the middle of the 17th century.
The map is a striking example of Ortelius’s cartographic skills and his ability to synthesize information from various sources. The map shows the Celtic Empire at its height, including parts of modern-day France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the British Isles. The map is decorated with elaborate cartouches, ships, and sea monsters, and is a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship of early modern cartography.
