The Gold Rush is a 1925 silent comedy film written, produced, and directed by Charlie Chaplin. The film stars Chaplin in his Little Tramp persona, Georgia Hale, Mack Swain, Tom Murray, Henry 1 Bergman, and Malcolm Waite. In this iconic film, Chaplin's Little Tramp character heads to the Klondike during the Gold Rush, where he faces the harsh realities of prospecting for gold, including hunger, storms, and a rivalry with another prospector. He also falls for a beautiful dance-hall girl, Georgia. The Gold Rush was released in the United States on June 26, 1925.
The film was a huge success, becoming one of the highest-grossing silent films in cinema history. Though it wasn't nominated for any Academy Awards (the awards ceremony was in its infancy at that point), The Gold Rush is considered one of Chaplin's greatest works and a landmark in cinematic history. Chaplin himself stated that it was the film for which he most wanted to be remembered. In 1942, Chaplin re-released The Gold Rush with added music and narration. This version was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Music Score and Best Sound Recording.
