Barbarella is a 1968 science fiction film directed by Roger Vadim. The screenplay was written by Terry Southern and Roger Vadim, and it is based on the French comic series of the same name by Jean-Claude Forest. The film stars Jane Fonda in the title role, along with John Phillip Law, Anita Pallenberg, Milo O'Shea, Marcel Marceau, and David Hemmings.
In the film, Barbarella, a space traveler and representative of the United Earth government in the 41st century, is sent on a mission to find and stop the evil scientist Durand Durand, whose invention, a positronic ray, threatens to bring evil back into the galaxy. Her mission takes her to the planet Lythion, where she encounters a variety of strange people and creatures. Barbarella was a box office success and has since become a cult classic, known for its visual style, sexuality, and campiness. Although it was not nominated for any Academy Awards or other major film awards, it has endured as a significant work of science fiction cinema.
