"Kiyomizu Hall and Shinobazu Pond at Ueno" (Ueno Kiyomizudō Shinobazu no ike) by Utagawa Hiroshige is a luminous and elevated composition from his One Hundred Famous Views of Edo series (1856–1858), capturing a moment of spiritual quiet and scenic grandeur at one of Edo’s most beloved temple complexes.
The print depicts the Kiyomizu Hall (Kiyomizu-dō), a sub-temple of Kanei-ji, modeled after the more famous Kiyomizu-dera in Kyoto. Perched on a wooded slope in Ueno, the hall juts out over a steep drop, supported by a wooden platform with pillars—just like its Kyoto counterpart. From this elevated viewpoint, visitors could gaze out over Shinobazu Pond, a broad, shallow body of water that lies just below, surrounded by reeds and pathways. The pond, in turn, is part of Ueno Park in today’s Tokyo.
