Nova Totius Americae Descriptio is an important seventeenth-century map of the Americas created by Frederik de Wit, one of the leading Dutch cartographers of the Golden Age of mapmaking. Engraved with elaborate decorative cartouches, sailing ships, and geographic details, the map presents North and South America as understood by European explorers of the period. It reflects both the expanding knowledge of the New World and the artistic craftsmanship that made Dutch maps prized works of art as well as practical navigational tools.
Frederik de Wit (c. 1630–1706) was a renowned Amsterdam-based mapmaker whose atlases and wall maps were celebrated for their accuracy, elegance, and rich ornamentation. His work played a significant role in the dissemination of geographic knowledge during the Age of Exploration. Today, De Wit’s maps are highly valued by collectors and historians for their blend of scientific cartography and Baroque artistic design.
