Ancient Map of Europe, XVI Century, from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius, is a Renaissance-era engraved map of the European continent, first published in the late 16th century, most notably from 1570 onward. Executed in the refined decorative style of early atlas cartography, it features detailed coastlines, regional names, borders, and ornamental embellishments such as cartouches and hand coloring. The work reflects both the geographic knowledge and visual elegance that made Ortelius’s atlas a landmark in map history.
Abraham Ortelius was a Flemish cartographer and publisher best known for compiling Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, often considered the first modern atlas. Working in Antwerp, he brought together maps from various sources into a standardized and beautifully produced volume. His work played a major role in shaping Renaissance geography, and his maps remain celebrated for their historical importance, craftsmanship, and enduring appeal among collectors.
