“Asia” by Carel Allard is a finely detailed vintage map, originally published in the late 17th century, around 1695. Engraved and hand-colored on paper, the map presents a richly decorative and geographically stylized representation of the Asian continent as understood in the Dutch Golden Age. Allard’s map includes ornate cartouches, sailing ships, and exotic animals, alongside embellished depictions of regions from the Middle East to the Far East. While not always geographically accurate by modern standards, the work reflects contemporary European perspectives and colonial interests, offering both artistic flourish and historical insight.
Carel Allard (1648–1709) was a prominent Dutch mapmaker and publisher based in Amsterdam, active during the height of Dutch cartographic dominance. He was part of a lineage of mapmakers, continuing the family business from his father, Hugo Allard. Carel was known for producing beautifully engraved and colored maps, atlases, and city views, often collaborating with other artists and engravers.
