Modern Times is a 1936 American comedy film written, directed by, and starring the legendary Charlie Chaplin. This iconic film, often considered Chaplin's last outing as the Little Tramp, also features Paulette Goddard and Henry Bergman. Set during the Great Depression, the film follows the Tramp as he navigates the challenges of modern industrial society, facing unemployment, poverty, and the dehumanizing effects of technology.
Although released well into the sound era, Modern Times is largely a silent film with synchronized sound effects and a sparse musical score. It was a critical and commercial success, lauded for its hilarious slapstick comedy, poignant social commentary, and Chaplin's timeless portrayal of the Tramp. While it didn't win any competitive Academy Awards, Modern Times was nominated for Best Music (Original Score) and is now recognized as one of the greatest films of all time.
