Elegant vintage reproduction of Fancy, illustrated by American artist Will Hicok Low for the 1887 edition of John Keats’ Odes and Sonnets.

The composition features a winged youth crowned with laurel, seated with a sketchbook, inspired by ethereal female figures and muses floating among the clouds. At his feet, a small incense burner releases curling smoke, adding to the dreamlike atmosphere. Low’s refined allegory and soft symbolism perfectly capture the romantic spirit of Keats’ poetry.

In Keats’ poem Fancy, he describes imagination as a light, fleeting, almost fairy-like power that can conjure visions beyond reality. Will Hicok Low visualizes that idea with a winged artist/poet (the youth with sketchbook and laurel crown) being inspired by ethereal female figures drifting in the clouds.
