Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from Margaret Mitchell's Pulitzer Prize-winning 1 novel. Directed by Victor Fleming (though with significant contributions from George Cukor and Sam Wood), it stars Vivien Leigh, Clark Gable, Leslie Howard, and Olivia de Havilland. Set in the American South during the Civil War and Reconstruction era, the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara (Leigh), the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner. It follows her romantic pursuits, her survival through the war and its aftermath, and her complex relationships with Ashley Wilkes (Howard), Melanie Hamilton (de Havilland), and Rhett Butler (Gable).  

Gone with the Wind was a massive critical and commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film at the time and holding that record for over 25 years. It received ten Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Fleming, and Best Actress for Leigh, as well as two honorary awards. The film is recognized for its epic scope, stunning cinematography, and memorable performances.
