"Metropolis" is a groundbreaking silent film released in 1927. Directed by the visionary Fritz Lang, this German expressionist masterpiece is set in a futuristic dystopian city where a wealthy elite lives in luxury while the working class toils underground. The film stars Brigitte Helm, Alfred Abel, and Gustav Fröhlich.
While it didn't win any Academy Awards (they were only established the same year the film was released!), "Metropolis" is considered one of the most influential science fiction films of all time. Its stunning visuals, social commentary, and exploration of themes like class struggle and technological advancement continue to resonate with audiences today. It was also the first film to be recognized by UNESCO in its Memory of the World Programme.
