Accurata delineatio celeberrimae Regionis Ludovicianae vel Gallice Louisiane is a remarkable hand-colored map created by Matthaeus Seutter and Gottfried Rogg in 1720. It depicts the Mississippi River basin, the Great Lakes, and the vast French territory of Louisiana as understood in the early eighteenth century. Executed in the richly decorative Baroque cartographic tradition, the map combines detailed geographic information with pictorial relief, extensive place names, and elaborate allegorical imagery. Its ornate cartouche and satirical visual elements reflect both the artistic sophistication and political ambitions associated with European mapping of North America during the colonial era.
Matthaeus Seutter was one of the most influential mapmakers of eighteenth-century Augsburg, producing highly decorative maps and atlases that became widely distributed across Europe. His collaborator, Gottfried Rogg, contributed many of the elaborate artistic features that distinguished Seutter’s publications.
