Psycho is a 1960 American psychological horror film directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The screenplay was written by Joseph Stefano, based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Robert Bloch. The film stars Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, and Martin Balsam.
Psycho was filmed on a relatively small budget in black and white, utilizing the crew from Hitchcock's television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents. Although initially met with mixed reviews due to its controversial subject matter, the film's immense popularity and box-office success led to a critical re-evaluation. Psycho was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Director for Hitchcock and Best Supporting Actress for Leigh.
While it didn't win any Oscars, it did receive recognition at the Cannes Film Festival and won awards such as the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress for Janet Leigh and the Edgar Award for Best Motion Picture Screenplay. The film is now considered one of Hitchcock's best films and is widely regarded as a landmark in cinematic history.
