La Floride, Suivant les nouvelles observations de Messrs... is an engraved and hand-colored map created by Pieter van der Aa in 1714 for inclusion in his Nouvel Atlas. The map depicts a vast portion of southeastern North America, encompassing Florida, the Carolinas, Virginia, Maryland, parts of the Mississippi Valley, Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Political and colonial boundaries are highlighted through delicate hand coloring, while rivers, settlements, and geographic features reflect European knowledge of the region during the early eighteenth century. The map exemplifies the decorative yet informative style of Dutch cartography during the colonial period.
Pieter van der Aa was a prominent Leiden-based publisher active during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Known for producing richly illustrated atlases, travel accounts, and geographic compilations, Van der Aa combined information from leading European sources into highly decorative publications. His maps are valued today for their historical importance, detailed engraving, and insight into how Europeans viewed and documented the Americas during the age of exploration and colonial expansion.
